The Borough of Tarentum is pleased to announce that the 2025 Proposed Budget and accompanying Budget Message are now available for public review. The proposed budget maintains the general tax rate at 5.48 mills, the same rate residents have paid since 2004, demonstrating the Borough’s commitment to fiscal stability and careful stewardship of public funds.
However, the 2025 Proposed Budget introduces a critical addition: a 0.5-mill tax specifically dedicated to supporting the Borough’s Fire Departments. This proposed tax, which equates to an additional $20 annually for a home at Tarentum’s median assessed value of $40,000, reflects the Borough’s recognition of our fire services’ vital role in protecting lives, property, and the community as a whole.
Why This Tax is Proposed
Tarentum’s fire departments are the cornerstone of our public safety infrastructure, providing life-saving services, responding to emergencies, and ensuring the safety of all residents. However, the rising costs of equipment, training, and operations have placed significant financial strain on these volunteer-driven organizations. Despite these challenges, our fire departments have continued to deliver outstanding service with limited resources.
The dedicated 0.5-mill tax will allow the Borough to provide sustainable funding to support:
Essential Equipment Upgrades: Ensuring our firefighters have the tools and technology they need to operate safely and effectively.
Operational Stability: Addressing growing operational costs to maintain a consistent level of service for all residents.
