Tarentum Borough Honors Robert “Bob” Sims for 77 Years of Fire Service

Today, Tarentum Borough proudly recognized Robert “Bob” Sims with an official proclamation celebrating his extraordinary milestone of 77 years of service as a volunteer firefighter with Highland Hose. The proclamation was presented by Mayor Bob Lang and Borough Manager Dwight Boddorf during a small ceremony honoring his unmatched commitment to the community.

Mr. Sims, 95, is a lifelong Tarentum resident and a United States Marine Corps veteran. Known fondly as “Pappy” to his family and “the War Horse” to his friends, he is the longest-serving firefighter in Tarentum Borough history.

Sims first joined Highland Hose on October 28, 1948, following in the footsteps of his older brothers. Over the decades, he has responded to countless emergency calls, participated in major firefighting efforts, and served in both secretary and president roles within the fire company. His leadership helped guide Highland Hose through times of growth, including the 1964 expansion of the fire station.

Beyond his personal service, the Sims family has left a lasting legacy in Tarentum firefighting, with five brothers each serving more than 50 years at Highland Hose.

“Bob Sims is the embodiment of dedication, loyalty, and community spirit,” said Borough Manager Boddorf. “It is an honor for the Borough to recognize his lifetime of service formally. His commitment stands as a true example for future generations.”

The Borough extends its deepest gratitude to Mr. Sims for his selfless dedication and service to the people of Tarentum. His record of 77 years of volunteer firefighting will forever remain a remarkable chapter in the history of our community.
